Within our activities programme we like to include reminiscence activity sessions for our residents to spend some time reminiscing about their younger days. Residents can talk about whatever they like, and we encourage them to talk about their best memories. This could be discussing past holidays, hobbies, work memories, wedding memories, wartime memories, or school memories.
Residents were looking at old currencies and photos of places from their childhood and adulthood. The memories came flooding back and it was great to hear our resident's fascinating stories about the lives they once lived.
We believe incorporating activities such as reminiscence into our resident's schedule is important as it enhances emotional wellbeing, and is also largely beneficial for residents living with dementia as it helps reduce depression and anxiety, improves communication skills, and helps them gain a sense of self-identity again.
