A Cozy Solution to Wet Weather This Rainy July
Indoor Puzzle Activities
This July in Haddington was full of drizzly rain that kept our residents indoors. However, we wouldn’t let wet weather stop us from having fun activities. Instead, we designed a series of puzzle activities, including Scrabble, dominos, jigsaws and more.
Why Are Puzzles Good For Older Adults?
These games offer many benefits for older adults with dementia. These games keep the brain active, help to improve memory, and slow down dementia symptoms.
- Puzzle games also encourage social interaction, reducing loneliness and fostering community among residents.
- Handling puzzle pieces or game tiles helps maintain fine motor skills, which are important for everyday tasks.
- Finishing a puzzle or winning a game boosts self-esteem and provides a sense of accomplishment, while the relaxing nature of these activities can reduce anxiety.
- Additionally, puzzles promote critical thinking and problem-solving, helping to keep the brain healthy.
Regularly engaging in these activities improves the overall quality of life for those living with dementia.
How do we keep residents entertained in rainy weather?
We never let the rain stop play. Although the wet weather meant we couldn’t venture further afield, we had engaging games indoors.
The activity was organized to give our residents a fun way to stay mentally active and interact with each other, especially to help pass the time on the rainy days we have been experiencing recently.
How do we look after residents with activities?
Engaging pastimes helps residents improve their memory, feel less lonely, and enjoy a sense of accomplishment and relaxation. Residents had fun exploring the different games and competitions.
