A Wild October at Haddington Care Home

October was anything but ordinary for residents at Haddington Care Home, as two unforgettable animal-themed experiences brought smiles, laughter and a wonderful sense of connection. From the wide plains of a Scottish safari to an up-close encounter with some exotic visitors in the lounge, our residents were at the heart of it all.
A Day at the Safari
We kicked off the month with a much-anticipated day out to Blair Drummond Safari and Adventure Park. The excitement began the moment we boarded the minibus, and the sunny autumn weather made for the perfect backdrop. Residents enjoyed seeing a variety of animals, from lions to lemurs, and even had the chance to pose for a few cheeky photos at the safari-themed photo board.
The outing offered more than just sightseeing, it was a chance to reminisce, connect with nature, and enjoy the fresh air and a day spent exploring. On the way home, we made a brief stop at The Kelpies, which added another special moment to a day already filled with joy. Residents returned home glowing with happiness and chatting away about their favourite parts of the adventure.

Celebrating National Animal Day
Later in the month, we marked National Animal Day with a truly hands-on experience. Calum from Cool Creatures visited the home, bringing with him an amazing selection of exotic and unusual animals. From cuddly meerkats and curious armadillos to giant millipedes and tortoises, there was something to fascinate everyone.
Our residents embraced the opportunity to interact with the animals, and their reactions were a joy to witness. Whether gently stroking a skunk, holding a meerkat close, or even daring to let a millipede crawl over their hand, each encounter was a personal moment of discovery. The experience was especially valuable for residents living with dementia, offering multi-sensory stimulation through touch, sound, and smell.
Animal therapy is known for its many emotional and cognitive benefits, and this visit was no exception. There was a lovely buzz in the room, filled with laughter, curiosity, and wide-eyed wonder. The care team were right alongside residents, sharing in the experience and helping everyone feel supported and comfortable.
