JOB ROLE: SUPPORT WORKER
- Deputy Manager
PURPOSE OF THE JOB
- To provide a personal care service compatible with the policies, procedures and standards set by the Company and the S.S.S.C
- Under the supervision of the Practitioners / Team Leaders provide direct personal care and support to all residents respecting their individual rights and choices in line with their Care Plan. To record and report important events.
- To liaise with Registered Nurses or Practitioners / Team Leaders and report changes to the care plan of individual residents and have responsibility for meeting the residents’ direct care needs as part of a team approach to practice.
- Deliver direct personal care in accordance with residents Care Plans.
- Participate at changeovers and to report significant observations/changes in general health and well being and any events relating to resident care.
- Record events in daily report sheets, food and fluid charts and food diaries
- Communicate with families/carers/other agencies including health care and social work staff as required and directed by the Registered Nurses/Practitioner
- In conjunction with residents, staff and volunteers and with reference to personal plans, set up and participate in groups and individual social activities/programmes within the home and the wider community.
- Help residents keep track of their clothes and possessions.
- Give assistance/support with personal hygiene and appearance, i.e. bathing, shaving, nail cutting and oral hygiene
- Give assistance / support with dressing / undressing
- Give assistance / support mobility
- Give assistance/support to enable residents to eat and drink
- Give assistance/support to enable residents to access and use toilet facilities
- Give assistance/support with the management of continence including simple catheter and colostomy care
- Give assistance/support to enable residents to achieve physical comfort
- Assist with the use of manual handling equipment
- Assist the Registered Nurses and Practitioners / Team Leaders in the care of residents requiring palliative care
- Assist the Registered Nurses and Practitioners / Team Leaders with the after care of a deceased person
- Assist the Registered Nurses and Practitioners / Team Leaders in enabling residents to maintain contacts in potentially isolating situations, e.g. due to poor mobility, communication problems due to a stroke, assistance with letter writing
- Assist the Registered Nurses and Practitioners / Team Leaders in the admission/discharge process
- Assist the Registered Nurses and Practitioners / Team Leaders to provide care and support to people with special needs e.g. dementia and behaviour which challenges
- Be aware of health and safety issues, in particular the need to wear personal protective equipment etc and to observe the Food Handling Regulations, Infection Control Policies and safe Moving and Handling
- Adhere to policies and guidelines around Adult Protection and to report concerns immediately to the Registered Nurses, Deputy Manager or Manager
- Provide care which is non-discriminatory and recognises the beliefs and preferences of individual residents
- Have awareness for security and to offer assistance to visitors entering the unit.
- To respond in line with the Missing Persons Procedure when a service user goes missing
- Participate in staff meetings.
- Accompany residents to hospital when required
- Adhere to the standards of practice set out in the S.S.S.C Codes of Conduct
- Follow company guidelines relating to confidentiality – GDPR
- Report immediately any situation which may compromise the safety of residents in line with the company Adult Support and Protection Policy
SUPERVISION AND MANAGEMENT OF PEOPLE
- There are no line management responsibilities associated with this post
- Post holders will be expected to co-operate with volunteers and students in the service
CREATIVITY AND INNOVATION
Post holder will work largely within as established framework of internal and external procedures however a degree of creativity and innovation will be required in the following areas.
- Contribute to the ongoing assessment of residents
- Contribute to the development in conjunction with the activities team a social and entertainment programmes for residents.
- Be flexible in meeting the changing needs of residents, including the ability to adapt to changing policies in the working environment
- Consider ways to communicate effectively with people with communication difficulties
- Put forward ideas to assist with the special care needs and challenging behaviour of residents to meet this individual outcome.
DEVELOPMENT AND SUPPORT
- Take a full part in 1:1 development meetings with the Deputy Manager on an individual basis as set out in the company policy
- Performance review will take place and an agreed professional development plan will be put in place as set out in the company’s policy
ENVIRONMENT – WORK DEMANDS
- Care Staff will carry out a range of tasks and work to a routine pattern of work dictated by resident’s needs. Interruptions will occur occasionally, and post holder will require to be flexible.
- Care staff will work a flexible rota pattern
ENVIRONMENT – PHYSICAL
- Stairs daily
- Standing for long periods
- Kneeling and bending frequently
- Pushing people in wheel chairs both in the building and outside
- Manoeuvring people or equipment on a regular basis
- Moving and handling of residents, including the use of manual handling equipment
ENVIRONMENT – WORKING CONDITIONS
- To undertake intimate personal care
- Exposure to body fluids on a daily basis
- Exposure to verbal and physical aggression
- To be able to work under pressure
- Exposure to heat
- Moving and handling of residents in confined spaces
- Potential risk of exposure to infection
ENVIRONMENT – WORK CONTEXT
The nature of tasks the Care Staff are required undertake will be routine, however the work potentially involves some risk to personal safety, health problems or illnesses e.g:
- Musculoskeletal problems
- Risk of physical and verbal assault from aggressive residents
- Caring for residents with end of life care needs requires emotional resilience
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
- Understanding of the ageing process
- Knowledge of the National Care Standards
- Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing with a range of residents
- Awareness of Principles of Dementia care
- Good Interpersonal skills
- Have an understanding of stress and distress and how this affects residents.
- Personal care skills
- Infection prevention and control
- Use of people moving equipment
- Knowledge of Adult Support and Protection Guidelines
- Understanding of SSSC Codes of Practice and adherence to these
- To be aware of Health and Safety issues and promote safe working practices in accordance with department guidelines

- Qualification: none required at recruitment. Post holders must achieve S.V.Q. Level II in Social Care/Health to meet SSSC registration requirements.
- Experience helping residents who have a range of health, care and support needs is desirable.
- Working within a team setting or knowledge of team working would be desirable
- This post is considered Regulated Work with Vulnerable Children and/or Protected Adults, under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007. From 28 February 2011, preferred candidates will be required to join the PVG Scheme or undergo a PVG scheme update check prior to a formal offer of employment being made by the company.
- The functions of this post require the post holder to be registered with SSSC on commencement of employment.
